Description

The Colombian bags made of caña flecha are yet another icon of the country. The plant, known in English as wild cane, is a sort of a tall grass, popular also in Brazil, Peru and other countries of the region. Among it’s many uses, it is most famously used to produce another emblem of Colombia – sombrero vueltiao predominantly produced by Zenú families located in the Departments of Cordoba and Sucre. The same technique is used to weave the beautiful, intricate handbags, often decorated with the mola patterns created by the Guna people inhabiting Northern Colombia and the Blas Islands in Panama. Our Colombian bags combine both of the ethnic threads – the caña flecha fabric with the boldly coloured, highly symbolic mola designs.

Both for the Guna and the Zenú, selling their craft plays an important part in providing for their families and by purchasing the products of their hands you are contributing to the tribe’s economy and to preserving their traditional art of weaving. Terrabomba is committed to fair trade and sustainable production principles  and we feel ethically bound to paying a fair price to the creators of the products in our store.

You can learn more about caña flecha and the Guna people in our story dedicated to them.

All our handbags are 100% handmade and carefully sourced from the people who dedicate themselves to producing them.
