Description
There are hammocks from San Jacinto and there are hammocks from San Jacinto made by Señora Gladys – and these are the cream of the crop, the real masterpieces of the hammock-making art. Doña Gladys is arguably the most experienced weaver of the pueblo and her workshop is among the most renown. The gems that come out of there are hard to acquire as they are immediately snatched up by handmade hammock connoisseurs from across the world. Those at our disposal are huge, double hammocks made of thick, heavy yarn of the highest quality, with colours guaranteed not to fade even after years of exposure to sun. Each handmade hammock weights 3,5 – 4 kilograms (without and with the fringe respectively).
For the artisans of San Jacinto, producing and selling their craft is the only way of subsistence, most of them have spent their whole lives mastering the skills necessary to reach their level of expertise. By purchasing the products of their hands you are contributing to the community’s economy and to preserving their traditional way of life. Terrabomba is committed to fair trade and sustainable production principles and we feel ethically bound to paying a fair price to the creators of the products in our store.
